HTTP Status Codes🧾 and Authentication (API Keys/Tokens)
Let's dive into HTTP Status Codes🧾 and Authentication (API Keys/Tokens) using real-world example🍕
HTTP Status Codes: So what's the Kitchen's Response🥡
🔢 After you place your order with the waiter (API), the kitchen needs to send back a report on how it went. Instead of shouting long explanations, they use a quick 3-digit shorthand code.
if They sent to you.. 200 OK – "Here is your pizza!" Everything went perfectly. The kitchen made the food, and the waiter successfully put it on your table.🙂
400 Bad Request – "We don't understand your order." You asked for a "pineapple and concrete" pizza. The kitchen doesn't know how to process that nonsense. 😳
401 Unauthorized – "Are you even a customer here?" You walked into the private VIP lounge and started demanding food without showing a VIP pass.😎
404 Not Found – "That's not on the menu." You tried to order sushi at a pizzeria. It simply doesn't exist here. 🤯
500 Internal Server Error – "The oven caught fire!" It’s not your fault. The kitchen messed up internally, the chef dropped the dough, and everything crashed. 🥵
So now, what about... API Authentication ~ The VIP Wristband & Key Card
Inside the Concept is API Keys / Bearer Tokens are your Digital Wristbands.
When you walk into an exclusive resort restaurant 🍖, you check in at the front desk once (Login). They strap a secure, tamper-proof wristband (Token)🔑 onto your arm. For the rest of the night, you don't need to pull out your ID every time you order a drink. You just show the waiter your wristband. If the wristband is cut off or expires (Token expiration), the waiter will refuse to serve you.
Anyone can look at a public menu, but what if you want to access the premium buffet or charge food to a corporate tab? The restaurant needs to know exactly who you are.
